The most popular online Blackjack variants
The popularity of Blackjacks among casino fans has led to it splitting into many forms. The main differences between the various Blackjack variants we know today are usually in the number of decks used in the game, the betting types, the allowances for splits and the dealer’s restrictions.
The online Blackjack variants listed below are the ones you can find in various online casinos. Their game rules are quite similar, with small differences that distinguish the variants from each other.
Classic Blackjack, also called American Blackjack, is the most commonly played form of the game. The original Blackjack variant is played with eight decks of 52 cards each, where the dealer does not receive a hole card and must hit on soft 17. The main objective of Classic Blackjack is to make a hand that is as close to “21” as possible and not exceed the number limit. In Classic Blackjack, both doubling and splitting are allowed, and up to 2 re-splits are allowed, with doubling after a split.
In European Blackjack, two decks of 52 cards are used. In this type of Blackjack, the dealer must stand by a soft 17, which is more advantageous for the players. In European Blackjack, the dealer has to wait until the player has made his decision on how to play the cards to get his hole card. In contrast, each player is dealt one card face up and then a second card only after all players have completed their hand. Since they may be playing Blackjack against a dealer, it is more difficult for players to double down and split.
Spanish 21, also known as Pontoon, seems to be very advantageous for the player. The player can even win with a 21 instead of push if the dealer also has 21. Removing 10s from the deck is the main difference between Spanish 21 and other forms of Blackjack. In general, the dealer has an advantage when there are fewer cards with a value of 10. This also means that the player starts each round with a lower chance of winning than in simple online Blackjack.
Perfect Pairs Blackjack
In Perfect Pairs Blackjack, the same rules apply as in classic Blackjack, but with the exception of an additional side bet at the beginning of each round. This side bet is an additional wager that the first two cards will have the same value. Before the cards are dealt, players are offered the “Perfect Pairs” side bet. Their first two cards must have the same value or be a face card to form a pair, and thus the side bet wins.
Blackjack with multiple hands
One of the newest forms of Blackjack, players are allowed to play more than one hand at a time in multi-hand Blackjack. In this variant, the 3:2 pay-out ratio for Blackjack still applies, and dealers must stand at soft 17s. Another advantage for players is that they can spread their bets over a larger number of hands instead of depending on just one hand for each deal, which allows them to diversify their risk.
In Blackjack Switch, the player plays two hands instead of one. When the player receives his two hands, he has the option to switch the second cards he receives between his two hands, which gives him a great advantage. To get the best hand, the second card dealt to each hand can be swapped. However, there are other rules that strongly favour the dealer. For example, if the dealer gets a 22 instead of being bust, this would cause a push against any player hand that is not bust or 21.
